The Black Lives Matter era has been a catalyst for meaningful discussion about the uneasy relationship between the police and many racially and economically isolated communities, and about how policing can be reformed to avoid deaths like those of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and more. 

The issue of police accountability is as old as police departments themselves, dating back to the mid-1800s. 

Police violence and misconduct leave more and more Americans asking themselves what can be done and calling out for the police’s total defunding. 

Equal Justice Now continues to work on the front line looking for systems to enhance accountability through reform.
